This workshop will focus on demonstrating how teachers can present rich mathematical tasks to promote productive struggle in a natural way. Every child knows how to persevere, but many are inhibited by the fear and anxiety of getting wrong answers and in turn getting bad grades. By using the same psychology that video game designers use to make games addictive, teachers can pique student curiosity, get them to embrace challenges, and persevere even when they have not yet mastered the content.

Teachers will learn simple strategies and tips to help change student mindsets, spark curiosity, and create a culture where students persevere. When coupled with descriptive feedback, we can encourage growth mindsets.

The workshop features a collection of interactive activities where teachers can work through their own thinking as well as reflect on how the methods shown can be used for effective teaching.
