Why:
Summary: There are 6 components of early literacy – print motivation, print awareness, letter knowledge, narrative skills, vocabulary, and phonological awareness. This session will specifically focus on phonological awareness in the form of vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and the importance of speech and speech sound development. A brief introduction of current early literacy research will be followed by classroom application/student activities.

Objectives:

Understand how the brain learns how to read.
Understand the role vocabulary and phonemic awareness play in the development of early literacy.
Understand the importance of explicit instruction.
Demonstrate instructional strategies to build phonological awareness.
Understand how to use manipulatives to enhance learning for all students.
